Multilingual blog?

I am not really bilingual, as my mother tongue is Portuguese - and Portuguese only. But I already consider myself quite comfortable with the English. At least comfortable enough to try to maintain a blog in English as well.

After attending to BlogCamp Switzerland and taking part in an interesting discussion on multilingual blogs, I decided to keep this blog in as many languages as I can. For the time being, those would be English and Portuguese only. But who knows, maybe in the near future I will be able to blog in French, Finnish or Esperanto. =)

Anyway, this post is to alert you that keeping a multilingual blog is not necessarily translating everything. In fact, it is quite different from that. It is about making bridges (to use Stephanie Booth's term). I want to post in English about things that might interest English-speaking people, but also about what is happening in the other side of the river, where people speak only Portuguese. Also, I want to report to my Portuguese-speaking community whatever happens here that might be useful there. So, not everything will be translated. But I can assure you that the things that I think would be relevant for both worlds, I will translate or cross-post.

So, tip for people who can understand both languages: try clicking in the language selector on the right column. There might be interesting content in both of them. This is just while I figure out a way of giving you the option to see all the content in the front page, or filter by language.

Hopefully, the Drupal module Internationalization makes it easier for me to keep track of what I should translate or not - for example this post. A link to the Portuguese version will appear below it shortly ;)
